Piranha Death/Thrash Pioneers
PIRANHA was formed in 1987 by Giannis (guitar & vocals), Kostas (bass) and drummer Michalis (from Deviser), which makes them one of the pioneers of Greek metal music. After the drums were taken over permanently by Babis (from Fragile Vastness) and a little later Denis (guitar) from Acid Death joined. They have played many concerts in Greece as well as participating in several major festivals. The band, during its 14-year participation in the Greek metal scene, managed to release 3 albums and play together with big international names such as DESTRUCTION and MALEVOLENT CREATION as well as with many big Greek bands such as SEPTIC FLESH, ACID DEATH, NIGHTFALL, FLAMES, DEATH COURIER, SELEFICE etc.At the end of 2001, the band disbanded.
Discography
Before disdanding Piranha released some Ep’s and demo tapes. Their first mini album “Worlds Grave” under Molon Lave Records in 1992, is a classic old school Death/Thrash Metal album.
The most interesting thing this EP brings to the table are symphonic, keyboard-heavy interludes in the songs “World’s Grave” and “Human Fear”.
World’s Grave is an album that shows the aggression of the Greek Metal scene of that time.Fast drums with heavy aggressive riffs and hellish vocals and also some atmospheric melodic brakes.
Arise from the Shadows
The band, after a 16-year absence, was reactivated at the end of 2017, this time with Andreas from ALBERT on drums, working on new material and participating in several concerts. In September 2019, they signed a 5-year recording contract with the well-known German record label 7hard Records, resulting in their new CD titled “Arise from the Shadows” being released worldwide in 2020.
Arise from the Shadows is recorded with an old-fashioned manner, which means that it doesn’t have to be overproduced or too complicated, just simple straightforward arrangements and decent songwriting seems to be enough for this veteran Greek combo. It’s some of the finest underground death/thrash is offered on Arise from the Shadows by Hellenic band Piranha.
